Engine Identification
In order to ensure we quote/supply the correct engine we will always ask for the engine code from your vehicle, unfortunately on certain occasions the engine code alone is not enought to identify the correct unit, in these circumsatnces we may need to ask further questions.
We do have a facility to check Vehicle Registrations however the details displayed are sometimes incorrect or incomplete, in general we will always ask you to ensure the details of the Registration check are correct.

Alfa Romeo engine codes contain five digits
For example 32.310 or 32.301.
BMW engine codes are split into two seperate parts.
For example M47-D20 (20.4D4)
Of the first part M47 identifies the family whilst the D20 shows the CC of the engine. Of the second part (4D4) is the most important as it identifies the specific engine type whilst (20.) again identifies the CC of the engine.
Citreon / Renault engine codes are split into two seperate parts
For example DW8 (WJY) or DW10ATED (RHX)
The first part of the engine code DW8 or DW10ATED identifies the family of engine whilst the second part WJY or RHX identifies the engine type.
In most cases the second part of all Citroen/Renault engine codes can be found as the sixth, seventh and eighth letters of the vehicle chassis number.
Fiat engine codes consits of three numbers followed by one letter and a further four numbers
For example 188A4000.
Earlier Ford engine codes consist of a combination of three letters and/or numbers
For example DHA or L1T.
Later Ford engine codes consits of a combination of four letters and/or numbers
For example FMBA or G8DA.
Unfortunately our Registration checker will not give engine codes for any TDCi Ford Transit engine. The BHP of the engine can help to narrow down the options, however the best way to identify the correct unit is with the engine code. In general the engine code for Transit engines can be found on the chassis plate in the passengers side door sill.
Iveco engine codes follow two different formats.
Option 1 the engine code consits of four digits a dot and two digits followed by, either four digits, or a letter and four digits.
For example 8140.43.3718 or 8140.43C.4000
Option 2 the engine code consits of nine letters and/or numbers.
For exampe F1AE0481B
Certain Iveco applications can be identified by the vehicles chassis number alone, however we will also require the engine code from your vehicle to ensure we have identified the correct unit.
Mazda engine codes consits of up to five letters and/or numbers but in general only consits of two.
For example RF-DI or L8
Mercedes engine codes consit of two sets of three numbers seperated by a dot.
For example 611.981.
Mercedes engine codes may be presented as engine numbers in certain circumstances.
Mitsubishi engine codes always consits of one number, one letter and two numbers, certain engine codes can have up to four more letters and/or numbers after this.
For example 4M40 or 4D36DI-D
Nissan engine codes generally consit of two letters, two numbers, and two more letters. In certain circumstances there may be further letters after this. The two numbers in the middle of the engine code denote the CC of the vehicle.
For example QR25DE or VG30DETT
Vauxhall engine codes consits of one letter, two numbers and a further two letters. The two numbers in the middle of the code denote the CC of the engine.
For example Z10XE.
Certain engine types may carry a further letter at the end of the engine code.
For example Z10XEP
In this case the extra P denotes that the engine is a Twinport.
Rover engine codes can be found as the engine number on most Rover / MG/ Land Rover vehicles.
All Rover engine codes consits of two numbers, one letter, one number and two more letters.
For example 14K4FP.
The first two digits denote the CC of the engine, the first letter denotes the family and the next number denotes the number of valves per cylinder. The proceeding letters and numbers help to identify the exact engine.
Renault engine codes consits of two sets of three characters.
The first set will have one letter one number and a further letter, the second set will have three digits.
For example F4R-701 or G9T-720.
In the second set of characters (the three digits) even numbers represent engines fitted with a manual transmission whilst odd numbers represent engines fitted with automatic transmissions.
Saab engine codes consist of one letter, three numbers, and up to two more letters.
For example B203L.
The first and second numbers of the engine code denote the CC of the engine.
Earlier VW Audi Group engine codes consits of a combination of two letters and/or numbers.
For example DG or 1Y.
Later VW Audi Group engine codes consist of a combination of three letters
For example BLB or AXC.
Most VW Audi Group engine codes can be found on the service sticker of the vehicle along with the Gearbox code.
