General fitting recommendations
It is important to find out why the original gearbox needs replacing. You should always determine the cause of, and resolve, any gearbox failure before fitting a VEGE remanufactured gearbox. If an existing defect has not been fixed, the resulting damage claim may not be covered by the VEGE warranty.
It is therefore essential that all transmission related components are checked and, if necessary replaced. Failure to comply with this could result in severe damage to your
VEGE exchange unit; the resulting damage could invalidate your warranty.
All VEGE exchange products should be subjected to a visual inspection before accepting delivery, any damage found after the carrier has left is your responsibility.
Alway use the OEM recommended grade of transmission oil, using the wrong grade of oil will cause damage to synchromesh rings and internal transmission components.
We recommend that the following transmission related items are checked and replaced with either new or reconditioned items, if found unserviceable.
Clutch and Flywheel components
If there are any signs of wear or damage to the flywheel it should be replaced.
Dual Mass flywheels should be checked very carefully and only refitted if within the manufacturers recommended tolerances.
Clutch Assemblies and Crankshaft Bearings (were fitted) should be replaced. Clutches not clearing correctly will result in premature wear of synchromesh rings and grinding or blocking when trying to engage gear.
Hydraulic Cylinders should be checked very carefully and replaced if needed.
All bolts and support dowels should be checked for wear and replaced if needed.
Drive Shaft
Drive Shafts on front wheel drive vehicles should be checked carefully for signs of wear on the seal surface and both end joints.
Rubber Gaiters on both ends of the drive shaft should be free from tears or holes, any securing clips should be tight.
Faults with the drive shaft may cause premature wear to the drive shaft oil seals, vibrations through the vehicle and damage to the internal gears in the transmission differential. This will in turn result in premature wear and damage to the transmission unit.
Propshaft
Prop Shafts on Rear Wheel Drive and 4 Wheel Drive vehicles should be checked very carefully, propshaft securing bolts should be free from wear and be fitted with shake proof or nylock nuts.
Univeral Joints must be in good condition and show no signs or wear or damage.
Loose bolts or worn Univeral Joints will cause damage to a replacement transmision unit, causing vibrations throught the vehicle, damage to oil seals and loss of lubrication oil.
This will cause premature wear to all bearings and other transmission components.
Mounting
All transmission mountings should be checked and replaced were applicable, rubber mountings will wear over a period of time.
Worn or damaged mountings can cause damage to a replacement transmission unit resulting in damaged casings, vibrations and noise through the vehicle.
Gear Linkages
Gear Linkages should be checked with care, all bushes and pins should be checked, a worn gear linkage can cause sloppy gear change and difficult gear selection.
After a replacement transmission is fitted all linkages should be checked and adjusted for optimal gear changes.
